Dear Participant,

I am a non-practising barrister currently researching the experiences of people representing themselves in legal matters without the benefit of a professional legal representative. I am conducting this research for the purposes of writing a practical and easy to understand guide book to assist the ever increasing numbers of people who do not qualify for legal aid and face the prospect of representing themselves. In the book I would like to include contributions from people such as yourself as to your own experiences and any advice that you would offer others who may be just starting out on the process. I sincerely believe that reading of the experiences of others who have also taken what for most will be a daunting and stressful journey will give people guidance and practical help but also support and someone to relate to and identify with. Attached to this letter is a questionnaire asking for your comments on your case and experience as a litigant-in-person. I would be extremely grateful if you would spend a few minutes of your time to complete this questionnaire and return it to Brad Meyer of Help4LiPs who has very kindly agreed to assist. Brad will then forward your completed questionnaire on to me. I will not be provided with your email address and as you will see your privacy and anonymity is protected as you are only asked to indicate your gender. You are not expected to provide any information from which you could be identified personally. Extracts from your responses may be quoted in a future publication designed to assist and inform other litigants-in-person by sharing in your experiences. I hope you feel able to help as your input may provide important and useful information and increase the understanding of people facing the difficult task of acting as their own lawyer.

Thank you very much for your participation which is greatly appreciated.
